FACCOMBE
Hypothetical Old English 'Faccancumb'='Facca's valley'. 'Facca' is not recorded, but is the precise equivalent of the continental Germanic man's name 'Facco. Cumb' usually denotes a bowl- or trough-shaped valley with three steep sides (cf Cole 1982). Such valleys are common near the chalk scarp, and there is a COMBE just across the county boundary in Berkshire (formerly in Hampshire). Faccombe village actually overlooks its valley from the top of a spur.
